Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
