European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
