The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
